proud mommy moment

I was going through Maddie's papers that she brought home from school on Friday. In her folder I found an essay she wrote, entitled "People I Admire." Her essay began with writing about Rosa Parks and Abraham Lincoln, explaining all the reasons she admires them and the things they accomplished. But it was the last paragraph that made my heart swell:

"The last group I admire is my own mom and dad. They lead me to Christ by living a life centered around Him. Also, they put up with me when I couldn't put up with myself."

Are there any greater words that a mom would want to hear?

All these years. All the feelings of inadequacy. All the times it has seemed they just don't get it. Moments spent wondering if we have screwed up one too many times. The tears. The frustration. The feelings of just wanting to pack it all up and move to Hawaii.

Gone.

It is worth it. They do get it. Only by the grace of God.

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

what a loss

I know I haven't blogged in a long time, but I had to share this tribute of an amazing woman I got the privilege of knowing in Swaziland. There isn't much to say beyond what was written here by Marcia Borg, so I will let her words speak.

Precious
in the sight of the LORD
is the death of His godly ones.
Psalm 116:15
I met Lucy Dlamini on our very first trip to Swaziland in 2005. She quickly created a soft spot in my heart with her most welcoming greetings and extreme thankfulness. Each time we would meet, she would throw her hands in the air and repeat (in English), "O my God, O my God, thank you, thank you! God bless you, God bless you, O thank God!"
Her smile was contagious and her grip was strong as her small stature exuded great strength. Her loving character and sense of humor regularly caused my soul to laugh in delight. Lucy was a woman who crossed cultures, language barriers, and misunderstandings in profound ways through her ability to communicate with her whole being. I have woven in and out of her life for the last six years and she has always been the same Lucy. She always made me feel good. And I recognized and appreciated that about her.
And now I have learned that Lucy has died. I have experienced a sadness that has left me at a loss for words. But more than anything, I want to honor her. I want to honor Lucy Dlamini, one of God's precious women of Swaziland.
Lucy has been a volunteer cook at the Bhalekane carepoint since 2004. In all of her loveliness she also knew how to carry a stick and love many children into obedience, respectfulness, and order! She was a Swazi hero who carried the blessing and burden of orphan and vulnerable child care every day. She has been a hardworking gogo of Timbali Crafts and always brought life and spirit to our meetings, sewing days, and retreats. Lucy was daily decorated with unique scarves that reflected her inner beauty and her friendly and upbeat nature:)
Lucy was one of the first gogos that welcomed and loved our son Josiah and his future wife Meredith on their first Swazi trip in 2005. (Lucy is pictured on the far left)

In 2009 Lucy enjoyed the Timbali Women's Camp entitled, "Imphilo Lensha" which means new life. I believe she is now experiencing the ultimate new life.

I love you Lucy!
As Lucy's health began to decline she was unable to attend the Timbali meetings and our last women's camp in the fall of 2011. But I was able to visit her a few times at her homestead along with Julie Anderson, the founder and director of Timbali Crafts, and full-time Swazi resident. These were precious moments that I will treasure forever. Even as she experienced pain and many losses, Lucy did not complain. She remained the same loving and welcoming woman who lifted me up. She would say, "Doctor, doctor, I am so glad you have come. O my God, thank God. When you pray I am healed. When you pray I feel better. When you pray for me my problems go away!Your prayers are my medicine. God bless you!" She accepted my loving care for her and she added her faith to mine.

The last time I spent with Lucy

Lucy was a widow with 2 living children and 3 who have died. Here she is with her pride and joy- her granddaughter! (above & below)

Part of Lucy's heritage is her son and his family, pictured below. She has left her Timbali skills to her daughter-in-law, Khosi Dlamini, (pictured below) who helped to care for her in her illness.
Swaziland is not the same without Lucy. Bhalekane and Timbali are forever changed by her absence. I pray the Lord will raise Khosi and the next generation of women to step into the shoes of the courageous and persevering Lucy Dlamini, who truly served her family and the children of Bhalekane with faith, joy, and strength.

Christmas Tea

Maddie and I had a special treat today. Our good friends, Leona and Noelle Strait, invited us to an afternoon Victorian Christmas Tea. We had so much fun! We laughed, shared stories, and ate really yummy goodies! The tea was amazing (I had no idea all of the science behind teas!). We each had our own tea pots and chose from a huge list of teas.

I was so glad I skipped lunch today! There was so much food, and all delicious.

But even better than the wonderful food and tea was the company. I am so thankful for these two lovely ladies...
And you know how I feel about this lovely lady...
This was just what we needed to get in the Christmas spirit. We learned a lot about teas, and English Christmas traditions, including the Christmas cracker, which did not cooperate as the girls tried to pop it together. All it did was break, but it provided great laughter and entertainment!
Thank you, Leona and Noelle, for a super fun afternoon, and for your friendship! You bless our family in so many ways!

slumber party

Maddie's birthday celebration was on Friday night, and we invited 8 of her friends over for a slumber party. Knowing this is a crazy time of year, I was sure that there would be a few that wouldn't be able to make it, especially since it was the first night of Christmas vacation. All but one could come. So, including Maddie, we had 8 girls over for a Movie Theater birthday party, complete with concessions and movie tickets.

Maddie's crazy friends...

Concession Stand and movie tickets
Caleb helped me figure out how much (fake) money to give to each girl, and how much to charge each girl for the movie ticket, a box of candy, and a bag of popcorn (that way I could have a little control over how much junk they ate!). The girls loved having money to spend and picking out their own candy.

Tickets are purchased and waiting for the movie time...

Movie time! (A Christmas Carol...a bit scarier than I remembered it...)

I was a little unsure if I could figure out how to make a movie-themed cake, but inspiration struck and it came together in the end.

The goodie bags

And, of course, the obligatory slumber party pillow fight!

Pancakes for breakfast

It was a great party, and the girls all seemed to have a great time. Maddie felt special surrounded by her friends. What a blessing to have such good friends. And what a blessing to have a slumber party with 8 girls and have NO arguing or bickering. They all get along so well!

The best gift came on Saturday night, when Maddie finally heard the results of her audition for The Sound of Music. Maddie got the part of Marta! She is sooooooo very excited! And we are preparing ourselves for the crazy and chaotic season of LOTS of rehearsals and late nights! Way to go, Maddie! We are so proud of you! For the role you got in the play, and even more so for the young woman you are becoming. Love you to pieces!

maddie sue

My baby girl turned 11 yesterday.

Seriously.

Can't quite wrap my brain around that fact. It blows my mind that this little girl...

has become this young lady...

Nope.

But, seriously, isn't she beautiful?

We all tiptoed into Maddie's room and woke her with singing "Happy Birthday."

Then we started the morning with our traditional birthday breakfast (which, by the way, has become more complicated now that we have two different school start times...). Maddie's special breakfast included her favorite, cinnamon rolls.

She got to open her cards and present.

Then it was off to school, where she shared her special birthday treat of hot chocolate and candy canes. Here she is with her good friends, Lauren and Autumn.

And the whole goofy bunch...

Nate had a wrestling meet in the evening, so I took the boys to Manitou Springs for that, and Maddie went on a special birthday date with her Daddy. They had a wonderful time, but the pictures are on his phone right now...

We all gathered at home for ice cream. Maddie is excited for her party on Friday night...a sleep-over with 8 girlfriends! Should be a blast!

Maddie brings such joy to our home. She has a deep heart that loves to worship and serve. She is the most dramatic kid I know (in a good way, really!) and keeps us all entertained. My heart overflows with thankfulness for her life, and the gift that God gave me 11 years ago!

I love you, Maddie Sue!

Difference of ONE

Please watch this video.

Difference of ONE from Children's HopeChest on Vimeo.

I am so moved by this video. I have been praying earnestly about how God wants to use ME to impact the fatherless, defenseless, broken, and destitute. How He would use our family. I feel like He has a plan, something I can't yet grasp. Seeing this video fuels the fire, makes me want to jump in with both feet. I am trying to be patient as I seek God on this, but my insides burn with a desire to do something. Now.

But I'll wait.

And, in the meantime, I pray. About the big picture. About going back to Swaziland. For my friends there and those I have yet to meet.

We serve a big God. A God that delights in using His children to minister to those that are hurting. A God that longs to use ME. ONE person. To change the life of ONE.
